Electrician Winston Hills

This suburb sits on what used to be Model Farms land, and it earned its current name during the war, after Winston Churchill.

The bulk of the suburb went up from the late 1960s, brick-veneer houses on big blocks, one estate after another until the whole area filled in. Later pockets of townhouses and villas came through as infill, but detached houses still dominate.

The local public school opened in 1970, right as those estates were filling, which dates the surrounding streets as neatly as any record could.

That single, concentrated building period is the whole electrical story here. Homes wired to the standard of the day, fifty-plus years ago, are still standing and mostly still occupied.

A ceramic-fuse switchboard is the most common find. It was correct wiring in its decade.

It isn't now, not against a house running a home office, a dishwasher and reverse-cycle heating off the one board.

Safety switches are the other gap. These houses mostly predate the RCD rules, and short of a renovation or a sale, that box has never been ticked.

Windsor Road runs the eastern edge of the suburb, the old 1810 arterial that's been the area's spine for two centuries.

Junction Road and Model Farms Road branch off it through the residential heart, past the older brick-veneer blocks where the original wiring is most likely to still be in the walls.

Renovation season keeps this suburb busy for us. Kitchen and living-area updates on the older stock routinely expose wiring well past its use-by date, which turns a cosmetic job into an electrical one fast.

Switchboard capacity is the other recurring theme. Layer a reverse-cycle system, a home office and a car charger onto a fifty-year-old board and it's carrying far more than it was ever designed for.

We see plenty of older gas fittings too, left over from the original build and worth a look whenever a kitchen or heating job opens the wall up.

There's a medical and community layer to the work as well. Long-running practices in the shopping centre and on Lomond Crescent, plus the local schools and parish buildings, all carry their own switchboard and lighting needs, distinct from a single household's.

A commercial fit-out isn't a household job, but it still gets assessed properly and priced on paper before we touch anything.

One Tree Hill Reserve marks the higher ground on the suburb's ridge, and the streets running off it toward Timbergetters Reserve are some of the earliest built, which tends to line up with where we still find original switchboards untouched since the first estate went up.

We know this stretch of Windsor Road well: the switchboards, the schools, the age of the wiring behind most front doors.
